MUSIC REPORT FOR ANNUAL VESTRY MEETING 2014
The festival choir presented two full cantatas in 2013. On Good Friday and Easter Sunday we performed
Lloyd Larson’s You Are the Christ! : Peter’s Reflection on the Life, Death and Resurrection of Jesus, a
dramatic cantata featuring Dennis Johns as Peter. Recently we performed The Mystery and the Majesty
by Joseph M. Martin as our Christmas Cantata. Thank you to Victoria Siu, our wonderful accompanist
for both of these major performances.
This Easter the festival choir will perform Allen Pote and Tom Long’s At the Ninth Hour. Rehearsals for
the Easter cantata will begin January 30, and there is always room for new singers. If you are interested,
you are more than welcome to come to our rehearsals Thursdays from 7-8 pm to see if singing in the
choir is for you.
This year we have again been privileged to have Chelsie Pall, soprano, and Raquel Dahlberg, alto, as
choral scholars and soloists as they continue their studies at the University of Western Ontario. We are
blessed by their talent and commitment to our music program. In September, Chelsie, Raquel, and myself
performed in a benefit concert for the food bank with Denise Pelley and Steve Holowitz. The event was
also intended to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the parish, and it was a great success.
In 2013 we saw many new and exciting developments in the music program. Last January, we purchased
a baby grand piano for the sanctuary. We have also improved the sound of services with a series of new
microphones (cordless hand-held, clip-on, and choir). In addition, we have made use of the new projector
and laptop for weekly PowerPoint presentations at the 10:00 am services. This allows for a greater
flexibility with musical choices as we can learn new hymns and incorporate alternate verses for old
favourites without excess paper use.
I’m greatly looking forward to 2014 and another year of music at St. Jude’s!
