A Summer Sermon Series: Life After Grace

For three weeks in the midst of August, we lift ourselves from the languor of summer to consider how God's mercy creates a new people. Last week, we heard, “Hearing the Voice: Disciples step out when Christ calls.”

• Sunday — Strong Love
  How grace makes us see others differently
• August 23 — Becoming a Common Life
  Those who receive mercy become a people offered to God

The series is informed by a thought from the British Anglican theologian, Luke Bretherton: Christianity is not merely about believing certain things; it is about becoming a certain kind of person within a certain kind of people.  Bretherton asks, “Will we allow ourselves to be re-formed by a vision of humanity grounded in communion, shared responsibility and care?”

Outreach for August
In August we concentrate on the St. Paul’s food bank, and our own breakfast program. It’s time to think about backpacks and school supplies for the children returning school next month. See Cindy Warner for full details of backpack and school supply needs.

From Cindy Warner: It is that time again, Back To School Supply Collection. We had such a great response we are going to do it the same way. You just need to take an envelope from the Outreach Board and add your cash donation then place the envelope in the collection plate. Thank you again for your support, we will be taking all the filled backpacks and supplies to Lord Elgin PS.

Breakfast Program
This Saturday we are serving the last breakfast for the summer. It has been a busy couple of months and we are very appreciative of the generosity of our parishioners and friends who support this vital ministry with funds, clothing, toiletries, household goods and prayers. Thank you!
We are also thankful for the time commitment and hard work of our volunteers - the shoppers, the bakers, the Friday prep teams, Saturday servers, students and seniors and those in between. Thank you!
We are now working on the schedule for the next several months. If you are looking for a new challenge and have a few hours each month to serve those in our community, please contact anyone on the Breakfast Program team or the office at 519-660-6198 or stjudeslondon@diohuron.org. Not ready to commit - come and see the teams in action this Friday from 9 - 11 am or Saturday when we serve breakfast from 9 - 10:30 am. All are welcome!

Advance notice reminders:
1) The St. Jude mini-putt social is getting closer!   Please join us for a fun game or two on Sept. 19, 3:45 pm at Tin Cup, at 1324 Adelaide St. North. We had a very good turnout of enthusiastic putters last year.  This is an all ages event.  Please invite your friends.  Cost to play is $14.99 + tax for one or two games (18 holes each).  Putters and balls will be provided.   We will have a casual dinner at the church immediately after we finish playing. Suggested contribution to the cost of the meal will be provided closer to the event.  We will likely have pizza again this year.  Please contact the office at 519-660-6198 or stjudeslondon@diohuron.org if you plan to come, or if you have any questions.

Rally Sunday – September 13^th – After the 10:00 am service stay for hotdogs and corn-on-the-cob. You bring the salad (potluck style). Learn about what happens at St. Jude’s and offer your abilities to serve!

You are invited to a Parish Council Open House – On Wednesday, September 16 at 7:00pm, you are invited to an open meeting of St. Jude’s Parish Council in the narthex. Refreshments will be served. You are welcome to stay for all or part of the meeting, which normally ends at 8:30pm.

Why not join the choir? – A saint of the church once said, “Those who sing pray twice.” Why not give it a shot? If you’d like to join the choir this fall, please speak to Christina after church today. Choir practices will resume in September and there will be a social event for all choir members – veterans and novices alike - after church on September 20^th. Stay tuned for details.

Learning Together

Education for Ministry (EfM) Open House – EfM is a small group experience focussed on how faith connects and is lived in everyday life. One of EfM’s face-t0-face mentoring groups meets at St. Jude’s on Tuesday mornings. Interested in learning more? Attend the upcoming virtual Open House on August 26^th. Learning to Live Free: Six Stories from the Wilderness– Starting on September 13^th we will begin a new six-week preaching series based on the passages from Exodus designated by the Revised Common Lectionary. We will consider questions like, “Why do we sometimes prefer familiar bondage to unfamiliar freedom?” And, “What does a genuinely free life look like?”

The Pilgrim Course –This autumn, sign up for one or all six-session courses led by Father Kevin, Tuesdays from 7:00-8:30 pm. Explore the Creeds (starting Oct 6^th – in person), the Eucharist (Nov 17 – online), and then two more courses in the new year. Make your spiritual health a priority! Sign-up sheets for the Creeds course will be available soon.

The Heart Sees Further – Each Wednesday, Father Kevin offers a brief spiritual reflection viewable on St. Jude’s Facebook page. The current series is called “An Introduction the Devout Life” based on a book by St. Francis de Sales. As you view each reflection, please hit “like” and “share.”
