A Summer Sermon Series: Life After Grace
For these last three weeks in August, we have lifted ourselves from the languor of summer to consider how God's mercy creates a new people. Sunday, in the third message in this series, we hear: “Becoming a Common Life: Those who receive mercy become a people offered to God.” The series is informed by a thought from the British Anglican theologian, Luke Bretherton: Christianity is not merely about believing certain things; it is about becoming a certain kind of person within a certain kind of people. Bretherton asks, “Will we allow ourselves to be re-formed by a vision of humanity grounded in communion, shared responsibility and care?”
Outreach for August
In August we concentrate on the St. Paul’s food bank, and our own breakfast program. Also, even though school has just started the summer break, it’s time to think about backpacks and school supplies. See Cindy Warner for full details of backpack and school supply needs.
From Cindy Warner: It is that time again, Back To School Supply Collection. We had such a great response we are going to do it the same way. You just need to take an envelope from the Outreach Board and add your cash donation then place the envelope in the collection plate. Thank you again for your support, we will be taking all the filled backpacks and supplies to Lord Elgin PS.
St. Paul's Foodbank
Our next Sunday for donations to St. Paul’s Food Bank is Sunday 13th September. Don’t forget, you can bring things to the church any day, not just Sunday. Let's fill Laura's car!
Breakfast program
Our St. Jude’s team served 116 breakfasts this past Saturday - quite the difference compared to the 162 we served on the August long weekend. Why the difference? It’s very difficult to guess or predict. And since we can’t predict and prepare for the larger numbers - we don’t see much change in our costs.
Help needed: Another refugee group in the city has sponsored a mother and young child. They have enough furniture but need the following: plates, cutlery, pots and pans, towels, sheets (queen) Please let me or the office know if you wish to donate.
With thanks,
Cheryle Anne
Rally Sunday – September 13th – After the 10:00 am service stay for hotdogs and corn-on-the-cob. You bring the salad (potluck style). Learn about what happens and St. Jude’s and offer your abilities to serve!
Why not join the choir? – A saint of the church once said, “Those who sing pray twice.” Why not give it a shot? If you’d like to join the choir this fall, please speak to Christina after church today. Choir practices will resume in September and there will be a social event for all choir members – veterans and novices alike - after church on September 20th. Stay tuned for details.
