Outreach
In May the Focus is on Women.
My Sister’s Place: Is many things to the 100 plus women who walk through its doors each day.
It is Safety. It is Support. It is Sisterhood. Women who access My Sisters’ Place range in age
from 16 – 70 and come from diverse backgrounds. Most have experienced abuse, trauma, and
isolation. More than 80% are dealing with mental health challenges.
Needs: panties (all sizes), hats/mittens, small birthday gifts, hairbrushes, feminine hygiene
products; craft items, wool, jewelry.
Anova: formerly Women’s Community House (WCH) and Sexual Assault Centre London
(SACL). Anova provides safe places, shelter, support, counselling, and resources for abused
women, their children, and all oppressed individuals to find a new start. Provides enhanced
sexual violence and prevention work for youth, and an integrated 24-hour crisis and support line.
Needs: pajamas, slippers, coloring books and crayons, makeup, sheets, craft items, wool.
St. Paul’s Food Bank. Our next Food Bank Sunday is this Sunday May 11th, but we notice that
our gifts have declined somewhat, which is regretful, since the needs are still significant. The
food bank at St. Paul’s Cathedral has been in operation now for some 40 years, growing from a
small organization (Our Daily Bread, now Paul’s Place), to a five day a week event, and, sadly,
much in demand.
An excerpt from their website:
“A ministry that began with a simple and small pantry has grown to a five-day-a-week
operation. Hundreds of needy people come through our doors each week. When they come to
Paul’s Place they are not just looking for food. Each person that crossing our threshold is
seeking care, concern, and the radical hospitality of Jesus. The Board, along with the staff of
our Food Bank and our Fellowship Centre seek to respect the dignity of every guest we meet.
We can only do so because of the faithful and dedicated service of our volunteers and the
generosity of our donors”.
So it is a shame that our gifts have declined, especially since we are now one of only a few
parishes that continue to support Paul’s Place, as other parishes have found it necessary to cease
their support. Perhaps we can begin again to make a special effort to help them, beginning with
this Sunday.
Their needs continue to be Pasta Sauce , Pasta Noodles , Canned Meat , Canned Soup , Pork &
Beans , Peanut Butter or Jam , mac & cheese, toilet papers , granola bars or oatmeal for kids.
Now they especially appreciate receiving fresh produce – apples, oranges, vegetables.
Let’s see if we can improve our support for those who really need it! Every second Sunday of the
month.
Breakfast Program 134 breakfasts were served this past Saturday. We give thanks for our
generous donors who make this programme viable, and we welcome our new teen volunteers
who got involved very quickly this past weekend.
Our next breakfast is Saturday May 17th. Come and see how the program works, or have a
coffee with our guests.
